GROUP BY Clause

The GROUP BY clause is used to calculate fields such as totals and counts. These functions are used to calculate information prior to returning the data set. However, the GROUP BY clause does not require the functions to be used within the statement. It can be used to filter out duplicate results but this is not the normal usage for the clause. The COUNT() and SUM() functions are the most common usage for the statement. The functions are actually placed in the SELECT clause to be returned but how they are organized is handled within the GROUP BY clause.
